PHARMACIST ROLE IN TOBACCO CESSATION PROGRAMS

Objetivos

At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to

Pharmacists

  • List health risks associated with chronic tobacco use.
  • Identify the 5 A's for promoting tobacco cessation among patients: Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange.
  • Describe the 5 R’s framework (Relevance, Risks, Rewards, Roadblocks, Repetition) to assess and counsel a patient who is not ready to quit.
  • List the FDA-approved first-line smoking cessation medications and describe their dosing, side effects, and precautions/ contraindications.
  • Counsel a tobacco user on the proper use of the first-line pharmacologic agents (including dosing, instructions on use, potential side effects, and precautions).
  • Identify patients who are candidates for smoking cessation therapy.
  • Provide brief smoking cessation counseling interventions that promote use of existing resources for additional comprehensive support such as quit lines, local cessation programs, and web-based programs.
